Keep Up or Get Out? |
|
As technology advances at seemingly "light speed" some of us (me included) are finding the challenge of staying up to date with today's current applications somewhat daunting! This is a challenge we all face, but this issue has always been present; from the 1A2 guys resisting Digital, to Digital guys resisting VoIP. You need to make a decision and yesterday! Some of us don't like learning. If that's true, the rewards for taking action now will be even greater tomorrow.
I have a friend and customer, Eric Knaus. Eric is an NEC dealer in Southern California. When VoIP first appeared on the scene Eric decided that he was going to embrace VoIP & Networking, knowing that most of his traditional competitors would be slow to adopt it. Now, because he embraced VoIP early in the game Eric is recognized as a Telecom guy that is a "guru" of VoIP applications. (Don't let it go to your head Eric). Instead of being intimidated by a customer's IT department, Eric can more than hold his own. And that my friends will get business!
So you have choice!
Embrace the future and arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible or quit and go become a professional bass fisherman. I believe bass fishing is much more competitive than IP applications, so you might want to stay with the first option. There are many classes (online and live) out there to help you understand networking, VoIP, Computer app's and routers. Don't overload yourself. Pick something that will help you now and take it step by step. And for, "pete's sake," STOP TRYING TO LEARN ON THE JOB. It costs you time, money and opportunity. Owners with employees, you should be helping your Tech's find and take classes. Having them learning on the job is costing you way more money than you'd think. And if you have Tech's that don't want to learn, get rid of them and find some that do.
If any of you want advice on where to start or what to start on, just e-mail me and I'll direct you to some useful websites that can get you started.
